Snow Camp

What an epic week! The temperature only thawed above -20 on the last day and we saw the thermometer at -35 Celsius. For 7 days we trekked like explorers around Banff and Canmore. Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Downhill, Caving and even a Summiting to round out the adventures. A huge thanks to Mike Shaw for the caving and Sue Clark for organizing the Sunshine ski tickets!

Don't be fooled by Matt's bare hands. It was cold on the top of Ha Lin Peak
Marrissa Silhouetted against the Ten Peaks
Ben and Toby lost underground.
Breath freezes on everything.

Skating

What an amazing day! Because it hadn't snowed yet all the lakes in the mountains had perfect ice. 3-4 inches of crystal clear ice. We were even able to chase fish around under the ice and some saw a muskrat cruising around underneath.
Cascade mountain

Dogs off leash on the ice, in the National Park is ok right? I mean, they're allowed to swim off leash.

Erie feeling, being able to see the bottom of the lake. Maybe Jesus was walking on a frozen lake?

Chinook Arch and 'The Meadows'

You have to love them! No pogies at the end of November, and amazing sun sets. This is what many evenings look like in Calgary. And there is still enough snow if you want to ski, and no ice to be seen on the river. What a month!

For those of you who know Nottingham, this is a different Meadows. Much less scary, and far fewer burnt cars.

Water to Snow

Oh baby! Tuesday we were training on the water and today we got our first taste of X C skiing. So good! Can't have a better transition than that. After a hot tip from Ronni we found the ski racers secret early season training center, and only blocks from my house. So it has begun, and we are going to be the fittest ducks around. The only downside to the day was that within 2 minutes on skis I broke my pole so I had to hobble around with one pole. Luckily Toby isn't fast enough to make it too hard to keep up:)

Cheers

Meadows race series - #3

Well, the pollsters predicted it. Graham Jobe won his first race of the series! In a tight contest Graham punished the competition on his third run to win by over a second. Well done. You know what this means Graham...your handicap just decreased.

Tuesday October 28th will be a big race. Warm weather and lots of athletes itching for that elusive victory.

How to get there:
See google map below. Parking is in gravel lot under Glenmore Tr bridge. Paddle 3min downstream to the canal.

Meadows race series

We have now successfully completed two races in the fall Calgary 'Meadows' race series. So far Toby and Connor each have one win apiece. The handicap will continue to get harder so that everyone has a fair chance at the prize and to push everyone to compete.

Format:
  • 60second course, as many tries as you'd like.
  • Best run wins.
  • Each athlete is assessed a handicap with the goal to give everyone a shot at the win.
  • $5 to race. Everyone puts two dollars towards the day's race, two dollars towards gate improvements, and one dollar towards the most improved athlete at the end of the series.
So far we have seen 12 athletes compete in these races, with athletes from as far as Medicine Hat, Edmonton and Canmore. Everyone is eligible to race, in any boat. We will do our best to make you a fair handicap. For directions, email: mholroydcoach@gmail.com

See you out soon!

Jessica wins at American Open

Jessica Groenveld, of Innisfail, won last weekend's final World Series race for the season. The event was held at WISP in Maryland, one of North America's newest purpose built whitewater sites. The course is pushy and boily and tests even the most veteran paddlers.

On the flight to WISP Jessica's boat was crushed beyond repair, so she was forced to use her team mates' boats for the race. Luckily fellow HP athlete Anna Williams's boat was similar enough that Jessica's superior whitewater skills prevailed on the final day.

Jess said she was very happy with the race despite the obvious setback. She will use her race winnings to buy a new boat and celebrate Miley Cyrus's birthday in Disneyland.

Provincial Championships

What a turnout!

Thanks to the great organization of Joanne Cole and Lynn Jobe, among others, we had 38 athletes competing this year. 15 senior racers, 14 Juniors and 9 cadets makes this one of the biggest Provincials that I can remember. Congratualtions to all the racers for some inspiring performances. I was especially impressed by the cadets, many of whom had only been on the river a couple times. You all did wonderful!

A huge thanks to all the coaches who helped out over the weekend, coaching and safety boating, to take care of the new, current and elite athletes. Saskia, Amy, Kyle, Marissa, Matt, Connor, Glen, Graham & James. You guys did a great job and everyone appreciates your efforts.

I big thanks to Chuck and Rich and other volunteers for all the river upgrades and work on the gates so we had a great race course and novice course.

Now we're into fall & winter training. Continue working hard to improve your fitness and when spring comes you will see another big jump in your abilities. Everyone should check out 'Evil in the upstream' on YouTube. It is a movie put together for the International Canoe Federation (ICF) that explains the sport of Slalom Kayak from the point of view of some of the top athletes in the world. Alberta's own David Ford has a large role. If you think about paddling even when the water is frozen, you will get better.

Good luck to Jessica Groenveld this weekend at the final World Series Race in WISP Maryland. After a stellar performance last weekend at provincials we are hoping for more successes.

Stay fit, Have Fun. Hope you see you all at a pool race this winter.

Junior World Championships

We're back in the homeland now after an exciting finish to the trip.

We had the pleasure to watch Alberta's very own Marissa Dederer and Bryce Shaw compete in the Junior World Championships. This is Bryce's last year before he moves up to the big leagues whereas Marissa has two more kicks at the can.

Both athletes competed well and had some good paddling on the day. Marissa was in good stead with her first run but just missed out of the semi-final, 43rd, due to touches on her second run. It was a good start to her international Junior career. At next year's Junior pre-Worlds in France we will be looking continued improvement. In 2010...lookout!

Bryce attacked with his usual vigor on the first run, but touches at the top of the course made it difficult to mount a comeback. To his credit he re-worked his plan on second run and made a go of it. He was 5 seconds faster overall on his second run, and more importantly confused the National coaches with his solid, good paddling.

A big Thank You to Alberta Sport Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation for their help making this trip possible. Their Above and Beyond grant enabled us to send a coach for our junior athletes.

This weekend is Alberta Summer Games in Medicine Hat, followed closely by the Canadian National Championships in Jonquiere, Quebec the following week. Keep checking for the results of your favorite athletes.

Vir - Praha - Roudnice

This morning is the C1 and K1W qualifications for Junior Worlds in Roudnice. We will be headed up shortly to cheer on Marrissa and the rest of the Canadian contingent.

We've been in Prague all week training hard now that our races are over. We concluded a hard week of training with the best paddling of the trip in Full lengths yesterday. Matt and Haley stole the show. We've done a couple days of the tourist thing in Prague, and raced some ridiculously fast GoKarts. Prague is just such a good place to train, and no one has been sick!!!!

Last weekend we did a Czech race in Vir, just north of Brno, two hours east of Prague. It was a great little site with clear water, ferns, valleys, big trees, and lots of kids. There were 200 competitors for this limited attendance junior race! Pretty cool.

Graham was the best Canadian in Vir with a 6th and 9th overall. Haley was forced to paddle Graham's boat after she stuck a big rock through her's on the first day. Matt and Max were hampered on this occasion by touches.

I think the real highlight for the Canadians though was the Palicinky. The club was selling crepes with nuttella and jam, and we completely cleaned them out each day! We also had a little volley soccer tournament at our camping place.

Now it's the Jr National Team's turn to shine in Roudnice. Go Canada!

Training Camp/Alberta Cup #2

Hello Slalom paddlers!

Next week from July 30- August 3 we will have a whitewater training camp and the Alberta Cup #2 at the mighty Upper Red Deer River! This camp will focus on learning to use whitewater. If the level is ok, we will do some work in Slalom boats, but playboats, and especially longer, faster river running boats will work well too.
At this time of year the Red Deer should have enough water to be fun and playful, but not over-challenging or intimidating. Whatever the level I will MAKE it challenging!

The camp will then end by setting up a small race course and racing the Alberta Cup #2. Location will be determined soon but it will either be S-Bend or Double ledge. I like the idea of a super slalom using single poles and the waves at S-bend to make a challenging and interesting event.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Gunzbug - Praha

We have made it to Prague after a wet exit from the Gunsburg race. While the first day didn't quite go as well as had liked, the team did pick up a trophy for their Team exploits. Haley placed second both days, and Matt and Max each picked up a third place trophy on the second day. Not a bad haul for the weekend.

The race was small for Germany, only 130 competitors. The course got increasingly difficult, helped along by two days of solid rain. By the end of the second day, when the littlest kids had to paddle, the river was swollen, so the eddies were disappearing, the bottom hole was eating kids right and left, and the mud had creeped up past our knees.

We made it to Prague last night and got to eat breakfast with the other Canadian Juniors this morning. They are headed off to Roudenice today for their final preparations for the Worlds. Good luck to them all! We will remain in Prague till Friday, training and sight seeing, before we go to Brno this weekend for a race. We'll keep you updated with our adventures.

Junior Olympics Wrap-up

Well, a great time was had by Courtney, Levi, and Jesse here in Wausau, Wisconsin at the 2008 Junior Olympics. Jesse and Courtney both took second overall in the combined Wildwater Sprint / Wildwater Classic events and Courtney also came 3rd overall in today's Slalom. Jesse also joined forces with Gryff Griffin from Durango, Colorado, and me, to destroy the competition in the team race! We kept our form and were able to hold a tight weave all the way down the course, so I was pretty impressed with the boys.

Besides the competitions, I was most impressed with the paddlers' progression here on this big course. Wausau is bigger and faster whitewater then almost all the slalom sites in Canada and definitely more technical, so it was a big step up for these guys. Levi and Courtney, at first tentative, were surfing across holes and taking gnarly lines down the drop by the end of the week. While Courtney and Levi both swam, they also did a lot of rolls and are very close to having solid river rolls. Jesse toned down his frantic style and was really make the boat move smoothly and efficiently. All three paddlers were also getting very good at keeping their boats running to the exit in the upstreams, and being more precise through the offsets in the fast current. Their overall confidence constantly increased over the week. Overall, I was very impressed with these guys and very proud of thier progress! On top of that they were a real pleasure to work with all week, on and off the water.

And a note for WSAA-- let's host the Junior Olympics next year at the Kan!! All the kids here who got to go 2 years ago couldn't stop raving about it and really, really want to come back! How about the weekend before the Pan-Ams?

Augsburg-Gunzburg

The Gang!

Keep those rims clean.
The fence in Dachau...

Well it's not much of a journey, about 60km from Augsburg. We would have stayed in Augsburg and commuted for the weekend of races but the BLZ was full this weekend. We found the course the classic way. Drive, find water, follow it up and down to find gates.

Hello...water...anyone?

The Club here is actually pretty sweet. In typical German fashion they have a big clubhouse, nice green lawns, flatwater gates and a small ww course. We're hoping for some rain to augment the water, but none the less there should be about 120 paddlers this weekend.

Junior Olympics

Hello All,

We (Connor, Courtney Groneveld, Levi Severtson, Jesse Gillies) arrived this past weekend in Wisconsin, America's Dairyland! The drive was VERY uneventful, as always crossing Saskatchewan and North Dakota! Now we are in Wausau, Wisconsin, full swing into the Junior Olympics! The site is awesome, the weather is perfect, and Laurie and Tom Ollhoff are the best people in Wisconsin for letting us crash at their house!!!

We started the trip in Steven's Point, about 30 minutes south of Wausau. Here there was a race on the mighty Plover River. This was a great warm up race as it was just slow moving water with a few waves and some good eddies-- perfect for learning some basic whitewater moves. The Alberta kids held up well against some strong American competition with Courtney beating out all the girls to take first, Jesse powering his way to 3rd behind some very quick American junior boys, and Levi just missing the podium coming in 4th in the cadet class. The young Americans are pretty impressive with some really talented 13, 14, and 15 year old kids, so it was a strong showing from our Albertans!

Now we are at mighty Wausau-- quite a step up from the slow moving Plover. Wausau is a world famous whitewater course that has hosted World Cups, Junior World Championships, and many big international events like Champion Series races and Pan-American Championships. It will host the 2012 Junior World Championships. So basically it is the big time! And a big time eye-opener for Levi and Courtney. But they are real troopers and despite a couple of swims they are paddling very well after just 2 days here. Today Levi nailed two river rolls. Courtney said, "My heart stops every time I approach the big drop in the middle!" and then proceed it to do it better then almost everyone out there in the sprint race yesterday! Jesse is like a fish in water and is really showing some top moves. I often catch the American paddler's parents watching on shore asking, "Who is THAT guy!?"

Check out the pictures! Yesterday was a Super Sprint Slalom-- 13 gates. Our guys lost some time in a very tricky gate 10 (coach Connor blew by it on his first attempt when he tried it after the race!) but other then that showed some excellent stuff. Jesse's second run was excellent and was very competitive with the top guys. I also made the kids run the dam spillway where the water enters the course. I remembered it being pretty strait forward, but maybe they changed it, because it was pretty gnarly! I ran it today for a picture to give readers an idea-- not that you can tell! Now we will have the rest of the week training and then Saturday and Sunday will be the Junior Olympic races. I'll try to keep you updated.

Jesse catching air off the big hole at the top. This sucker ATE some kids yesterday and today!
Courtney stopping her heart on the middle drop!
Levi taking it to the next level!
Where is Waldo-- kayaking edition!

Augsburg, Germany - World Cup Weekend

Here we are in beautiful Augsburg. Not quite the birth place of slalom but certainly the epicenter f0r the sport for the last 45 years.

This weekend was the final World Cup race for the season. Team Alberta rocked in Friday just in time for the semi and final races. We were looking forward to seeing our Canadians rip it up, and especially Alberta's Jessica Groeneveld and Ben Hayward.

Unfortunately we were disappointed because we didn't get to see Ben race. A major penalty on Friday meant that he didn't qualify, and we didn't get to see his hair raising still rip down the course. He'll have another kick at the can next weekend in Spain.

Jessica did well and qualified 30th. Looking for more she had quite the entourage chasing her down the course. Maybe the extra attention was distracting as she picked up 10 seconds in penalties and pushed her back to 35th place. I have no doubt that she will clean up her race in Spain next weekend.

For our part Haley, Bryce, Matt, Graham and Max all trained well over the weekend. Sessions on the back forest gates, the kinder kanal, and the main channel have all been successful. The most epic session was off the course, when we did a run from the Hotel ending at the course. Then we jumped in the canal, clothed, and swam about 2km back to the hotel. It was well scary going under low buildings and bridges but by far the craziest was the European Beaver we encountered. No one seems to know they even exist, but wikipedia tells me that they were near extinction but have now been re-introduced across Europe and especially this region. I'm not sure I'll swim in the channel anymore now that I know they are around. It was huge!

We have now settled in to the BLZ for some serious training. Combined sessions with the Aussie and Kiwi Juniors should prove to be good for all. We plan to race in Gunzburg this weekend.

Alberta Cup #1-- The 2008 "Cyclone Slalom"!

Well for those that came down to the Alberta Cup #1 this past weekend, it was sure an adventurous time! Plus 30 sunburning temperatures on Saturday gave way to a howling hurricane on Sunday making the race a tad bit "challenging"...

Saturday's clinics were, in my opinion, quite successful. For one, the relentless wind miraculously relented! This provided a beautiful day for learning! But the best part was all the new faces that came out to brave paddling slalom on Whitewater! I was very pleased to see Shilo, Ashley, and Courtney come down from Cottonwood. I hope you guys had a good time out there and will be back for more! There were also a number of fresh faces from southern Alberta vying for a spot on their Alberta Summer Games team. Congratulations Rocky, Veronica, and Rebecca.

Come race day it was another story. As you can see in the picture above that Ian Jobe took of me, it was a tiny bit windy out there! I'm looking, up, up, WAAYYYY up because the gates were at times blowing horizontal! Nether-the-less I was pleased to see all the brave souls tackle the course, despite the risk of actually being blown right over!! It turned out not being too bad, and was good practice for paddling in the wind. I was a bit disappointed in our senior paddlers though as they have just decided to concede overall Alberta Cup victory to me by being too scared to show up-- Too Bad- I would have enjoyed whooping you guys in person. Maybe next race, hey losers!?!

Also a huge THANKS to the Cole family for hosting everyone at their lovely castle and sparking up the BBQ for us for some tasty meals! I think everyone had a great time staying together and eating meat and shooting guns and doing a third workout of the day with Dance-Dance-Revolution! Also, thanks to Chuck Lee for hosting Sunday breakfast and for organizing the race, and for building the race course! And thanks to all the parents who braved the hurricane to help judge and time the event. A great time was hopefully had by all!

Hayward 30th, Groeneveld 44th at World Cup Opener

Young Albertans, Ben Hayward and Jessica Groeneveld, both on their first World cup tours, participated in their first world cup ever in Prague, Czech Republic this past weekend.

Hayward showed promise early, qualifying for the semi-final in 20th position. His second running time in the qualifier was the 11th fastest of the day!! Hopefully Hayward will take some confidence away with that run and continue to blaze up the international scene. Hayward then advanced to the semi-final where he produced a running time good enough for 20th position again, but unfortunately just grazed three gates on the way down adding six seconds in penalties to his time. He ended up 30th overall, the top Canadian ahead of David Ford in 32nd, almost 5 seconds back in raw running time, and Nathan Davis in 33rd, 4 seconds back in raw running time. Way to show such good promise on your opening race Ben!

Jessica failed to advance to the Semi-final placing 44th in the Qualifier. The top 40 boats advance, so she was just outside. Unfortunately penalties were once again a problem and without her 16 additional seconds in penalties Jessica would have advanced into the semi-final! But make no mistake folks, these are insanely competitive races and first race jitters are only to be expected. But Jessica has proven this year that she is quickly on the rise! We'll watch for some good performances in the upcoming events.

VERY COOL from this years event!!! You can watch EVERY RUN from the Semi-final and final on video at the Prague World Cup website. Check out Ben's blazing (albeit a bit sloppy) run, and compare it to top performances in the final. The site is:
http://www.slalomtroja.cz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=143&Itemid=160

Now the athletes head to Tacen, a very HUGE, unpredictable, and difficult slalom site, for World Cup #2. This will be a true test of every paddler's skills and expect some crazy results. It might well suit "Hurricane Hayward" as we have all witnessed his amazing ability to just keep those paddles turning and keep his boat moving no matter what the crazy water is doing! This is a good skill to have in Tacen where a whirlpool might catch you and send you off-line-- The only thing to keep you going fast is to just keep on going! We'll keep you updated here at the Alberta Slalom blog.

Boulder Run Slalom/Alberta Cup #1

Well, this next weekend will see the return of the Alberta Cup with the first race in Boulder Run, Pincher Creek! Earn points towards the overall Alberta Cup and at the end of the year YOU could be the Champ! (Of course you'll have to beat me too it!) There will be 3 races and the Provincial Champs, so every race is important for victory!

I've never been to Boulder Run, but apparently it is a smaller course with moving water and eddies, ideal for the novice racer to open the season with and get a taste of the whitewater! So all you kids from Cottonwood-- I hope to see you there to get some moving water practice! We will have clinics on Saturday so you can get some practice on the course and hone your whitewater skills. Then you can rip up the race on Sunday! This will be a perfect opportunity to get out in the sun and have some fun and advance your slalom and kayaking abilities!

And for all you more advanced racers, this is going to be a great race, featuring some of the best paddlers in Alberta. Test your skills against members of our National Development team and Junior National team. And I'll be squeezing in some runs and I challenge anyone to take out my times!

Check back soon (Hopefully tomorrow) for all the details-- Schedule, costs, map, camping, etc.

Cottonwood Thank Yous

Got this note from Mac Gillies. Thanks Mac!

Hi Connor,

The Cottonwood Kayak Club would like to pass on a Special THANK-YOU to you CONNOR for your positive and enthusiastic energy that made the weekend a fun and rewarding experience for all the paddlers. We were not able to get our moving water gates up in time for the race but with Connor's vast experience we were able to turn the flat water course into a challenging event.

THANK-YOU also to MIKE HOLROYD for coming out race day to help with the athlete's and events.

THANKS to all paddlers that competed and supported our little race. By the smiles on the faces a good time was had by all.

THANK-YOU also to WSAA for the foresight in having hired performance paddlers to help inspire and train our younger paddlers!!! Well done.

THANK-YOU to all the PARENTS for the help and support setting up and managing all the activities race day. You are Cottonwood!

Mac Gillies
President Cottonwood Kayak Club

Canmore Race Postponed

Unfortunately the Canmore race this weekend has been postponed. Please check back soon for more information on alternative events. Currently I am suggesting slalom training at the Kananaskis on Saturday only and leaving Sunday free for your own time.

Thanks!

Cottonwood 2008-- "Grreeat Success!"

Despite the cold, rain, wind, flatwater, killer beavers, swamp zombies and mud, mud, mud, the Annual Cottonwood Club Race outside of Innisfail was a great success! Unfortunately the river course was washed out and some industrious beavers have made a super DAMN and flooded out the river pathway. So we improvised and held a mighty Head-to-Head sprint event on the flat! There was also a grueling DR race where I, for one, discovered I was probably a little out of shape! This was rounded off with some Polo skills, although a game never seemed to materialize...

I apologize to the volunteers-- with the head to head flatwater race and no judging necessary I kind of made your jobs disappear! But thanks for Bruce Waldie, Canada's head official, for coming down and explaining the rules in detail! I'm truly sorry that you then had to turn right back around and go fix the toilet that you were trying to avoid by judging the race! I'm sure Mrs. Waldie was happy! And thanks to Mac and Dan for setting up gates and the polo pitch. Thanks to Tyler Rice for showing all the Alberta Summer Games' athletes some killer polo skills. Thanks to Trina and Mike Cunningham for organizing and Mike for his awesome results program that we never got to use (Again, sorry Mike!) Thanks to Lisa Severtson for standing in the rain writing down all the times and then doing the math! I hope the head doesn't hurt too much after that computational effort! Thanks to all the Cottonwood parents who stood out on the dock and cheered and then had Burgers and Smokies and a million other tasty treats waiting for us afterwards. And finally thanks to Barry and Brenda Allen for hosting the event at their house and giving us a warm place to hide from the rain and dry gear (don't worry guys, that wet gear smell will be gone by next year! Oh wait, just in time for us to come back...)

As for the performances, there were many great ones! Especially the Gillies Brothers swimming-- 3 times!!! Quickly followed by Graham Jobe and AJ Cole. And little JJ showing all the older athletes how to turn properly! And when Courtney Groeneveld made her triumphant return to slalom and whooped her dad! And of course when I DESTROYED Mike in the head to head race! Ha! I was pleased to see that almost everyone raced almost every class, so I won't list the results here because almost everyone won something! Except I will note that there was an obvious error when Mike was handed the Gold Ribbon instead of me in the Men's category! Turns out we really did need Mr. Cunningham's results tabulating computer program so that error wouldn't have been made!

I was impressed by all the cottonwood athletes and I hope you guys all had a great time out there. Please check this web-page regularly for information on upcoming events. Check back tomorrow for info on this coming weekend's Canmore race. This is another slow moving water event perfect for all skill levels. I hope to see you guys all there so you can continue to learn, progress and have some fun! for now, check out the pictures!

Cottonwood Clinics/Race Saturday/Sunday

(Press the "View Larger Map" link to see a more detailed map that will lead right to the site)

Please see the following message from the Cottonwood Club regarding this weekend's event. I will be there from Friday night onwards doing slalom clinics, so if anyone is interested I'll hold a bonus clinic at 6:30-8 on Friday night. you can contact me via e-mail: kayakercon(at)yahoo.ca or phone 403-282-3374 (cell: Try not to call! 403-401-4601.) Here is the info:

Hello All,

Thought I would remind everyone that this weekend at Silver Lagoon we are having our annual race!!!

We will have a challenging course on the Little Red Deer River, which offers a nice easy current, easy access and excellent spectator viewing!

Saturday we will have training clinics for all in the morning, and the afternoon will see our DR race on flat water or more clinics. Registration for both days are at 9 am and plan to be on the water around 10am. The cost is $25 for Saturday's clinics and $10 for Sunday’s race. We have a pot luck supper on , bring a salad or dessert and smokies and pop will be for sale.

Sunday we will have our slalom race, 2 runs and then awards. There will be a concession for burgers, hot dogs etc.

Camping is near by and some of us have yards that you are welcome to set up in (little farther to the course). We don’t have any campgrounds booked, but people can check out Red Lodge Park, River Ridge, Dickson Leisure or the South Boat Launch. All are very close.

This is an excellent course for novices of all ages to have some fun competition on moving water that is not too challenging but rewarding just the same. For the more advanced paddlers-- a race is a race! So come on out and show the younger generation your skills!

We hope to see some people come out and enjoy the weekend and have some good times paddling with the Cottonwood Club.

Please contact Mac Gillies: callmac(at)xplornet.com or Trina Cunningham: sweetweet(at)telus.net for any additional info!

Alberta Athletes Shaw and Dederer Shine at National Team Selection

The Alberta sun dove behind a cloud and driving rain and wind descended over the mighty Kananaskis river. But as Alberta junior athletes lined up at the start line of the final event of the 2008 Junior National Team Trials their eyes were steelier then the dark, swirling sky. The fire and lighting was captured in those eyes, first in young Marissa Dederer, who stormed down the course in the final run with aggression and power, outclassing her opponents to the line to take a scintillating victory in the Junior Women's event. Combined with solid performances in the two previous races 15 year old Dederer proved she will be a force in the Canadian slalom scene for many years to come. None of the older Junior women had displayed such consistency as the young Dederer who has 2 more years of Junior nomination before entering the senior division.

Matt Frank took note of Dederer's performance and, despite some controversial calls on his previous race that would have left most young paddlers a mess of nerves, Frank attacked with a fervor quite contrary to his quite demeanor. Frank cut the insanely tricky move through gates 4-5 like a diamond in butter, striking a blow to his opponents upstream who looked on in awe as they waited for their own starts. It was Frank and Dederer's best racing ever, and a timely strike when spots on the National Junior team were on the line. Frank was leading, fast and clean, and fear struck his competition. In costly moves of conservatism, rivals from Ontario and Quebec proceeded to spin the difficult move at gates 4-5 where "Frank the Tank" had been oh-so-bold-and-daring!

But it would be Shaw who would bring the final lightning strike. Almost blowing the move at 4-5 by apparently forgetting where he was going out of the exit of gate 3, Shaw used his dominant whitewater skills to pull off the direct line cleanly from a nail-bitingly late approach. A touched gate in the middle section added 2 seconds in penalty to his running time furthering the drama. But in trademark Shaw style Bryce attacked the upstreams, not so much turning his boat, but absolutely throwing it from entry to exit. In the final upstream sequence Shaw whipped the upstream gate 18 on a razor sharp backstroke taking seconds out of the competition, sealing the victory and earning him the third spot on the National Junior Team. For a boy who had just started training full time for slalom this past year, and had flown under the radar for his unorthodox paddling style, it was quite the upset to the Eastern slalom establishment!

Alberta athlete's Graham Jobe and Haley Daniels unfortunately didn't have the consistency over the three race selection and ended up ranked 7th and 9th overall in their respective classes. Both showed amazing ability, and will no doubt be bright future stars in Canadian slalom. Daniels was clearly the strongest paddler in her class with sharp turns, and mighty forward power. Racing practice will surely see her upsetting the senior national team when she advances to the senior "Olympic" class next year. Jobe still has another year of Junior nomination. With his power, and beautiful forward and neutral style we will no doubt be seeing him grace the top international ranks at the next Junior Worlds competition. This year was already a good start with a 3rd place finish in the first race of the team trial, matching teammate Frank's third in race three. As for the mighty hero of race three, "Frank the Tank" ended up combining a 3rd place finish in that third race with a 5th place finish in the 2nd race to end up ranked 5th overall and named to the National Development team. All three athletes will travel to the BIG SHOW this summer to race in major international junior competitions in Europe under the direction of coach Mike Holroyd. Kick butt and take names like you can Team Alberta!!!

So in summury, congrats to Marissa Dederer and Bryce Shaw for their nomination to the senior national team. For full team listing and eventual results please visit www.wsaa.ca.

This also served as an Alberta Team selection with representation from Roni and Idan Wolach, Adrian Cole, Jessie Gillies, Levi Steverston, and Brett Embleton. Everyone paddled quite well and I was greatly impressed with the determination of these young paddlers to jump into such a big competition first thing in the year! The following are named to the Provincial Team: Roni, Idan, Levi and Brett. Conrats! Jessie and Adrian, despite showing amazing potential, faced stifling competition from some of the best Alberta juniors we have produced in Matt, Graham and Bryce. Excellent paddling on both their parts couldn't quite reach the percentages laid out by their older counterparts. Adrian and Jessie will be named to the Provincial Development Team. I encourage everyone to attend all the events on the Alberta Development Program schedule that you will soon be receiving, or have already received. The program info and fees should have been sent with the schedule. Please contact me, Connor Curson, at kayakercon(at)yahoo.ca or 403-401-4601. I will also send out information about team uniforms soon.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! to all the volunteers, organizers, sponsors, and supporters who made this event an extremely well run race! And congratulations to All the Alberta athletes who participated-- This writer for one was VERY impressed by the level of paddling from out top athletes. Keep committed and find a way to make it happen and you will be in for a wonderful adventure through slalom paddling!

Fast in Slovakia

Congratulations to Paul Manning-Hunter for his blazing result in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia. The 60th! International Tatra Slalom was held last weekend and Paul put down a clean run to finish 10th in the final.

Alberta's Ben Hayward was nearly as fast but touches pushed him into 25th position.

The next event is in Merano, Italy. Another international event with a long history.

Well done boys! Good luck in Merano.

Team Canada

Congratulations to all the Alberta Paddlers on their performances at Senior Team Trials!

National Team Members from Alberta
David Ford *(originally Edmonton)
Ben Hayward (Edmonton)
Jessica Groenveld (Innisfail- qualified the Olympic spot for Canada, which Sarah Boudens, from Ontario , eventually won)

National Development Team Member from Alberta
Chris McTaggart (Canmore)
Paul Manning-Hunter (Edmonton)
Thomas & Daniel Purcell (Innisfail)
Marissa Dederer (Calgary)
Alex Clark (Canmore)

In my last post I noted that I hoped that there would be less drama on Day 3. I was wrong. Despite some controversy it was an amazing event the USNWC put on. Over 120 athletes from 9 countries competed in front of roughly 20,000 spectators over the weekend. A big thanks to the Center and USACK for hosting the event.

Thank you also to James Waldie, Greg Hunter and Sue Clark for their help coaching, videoing and generally taking good care of the athletes.

Drama and Sub-Plots! I wasn't kidding.

Day 1

Friday was an exciting race. First day of team trials is always a scary one. Everyone has trained really hard all winter and this is the first test of the season and the last National race in over six months. Everyone is trying to get a read on the competition and everyone has high expectations. It was my first Team Trials off the water, and it was nerve racking not having any direct control over what happens.

Our Alberta athletes did well on day one and we held second and third spots in Men's kayak due to great, solid performances of Ben Hayward (Edmonton) and Chris McTaggart (Canmore) respectively. This sets them up well for the next days.

Paul Manning-Hunter (Edm), Purcell2 (Innisfail), and Jessica Groenveld (Innisfail) all had solid runs showing that they have the speed to compete Nationally. The Juniors girls showed potential mixing it up with the other Canadian juniors. Unfortunately Haley Daniels (Cal) broke here paddle on her first run after a solid top section. Marissa Dederer (Cal) had a competitive second run.

Day 2

Saturday was the Olympic qualifier for several countries. as I mentioned in a previous post there were Olympic spots on the line for North and South America in every class. After a crazy day of racing Canada sits with a men's kayak spot, based on the World Championship performance, with three athletes still in the hunt going into Sunday's race (David Ford (BC), Nathan Davis (BC), Pierre Levesque (Que). Saturday saw Innisfails' Jessica Groenveld qualify the country spot in an insane Women's K1 race. Now it is between her and Sarah Boudens in Sunday's race.

The continental C2 spot went to the United States as did the C1 men's spot in a heated race between Canada and the USA. Canada will have to wait to see if China will qualify a spot in a complicated chain of events.

The extra continental spot in K1 men went to Chile's Pablo Mccandles, despite all the tricks Brazil through at it.

Some stellar runs were thrown out there today by Alberta paddlers. Besides Jessica's good work, Graham Jobe had a great first run, Haley Daniels had a personal best performance on a re-run, and Ben Hayward came oh so close to securing a spot on the National Team. Still time tomorrow for National Team qualification. I'm expecting an exciting day tomorrow though I hope the protest tent has less work.

Stay tuned...

New Alberta Budget

Good News for Athletes! An HP athlete assistance program will be implemented to supplement the Federal program. This should be similar to what Ontario has already put in place. (see excerpt from provincial budget below)

  • $10 million for tourism marketing and development;
  • $2.6 million for parks operations;
  • $1.5 million to implement the High Performance Assistance Athlete Program which will supplement the assistance provided by the federal government for high performance athletes. Over three years, $4.5 million will be provided for this program, and
  • $2.4 million net increase in various other programs.

The Ministry’s capital expense is $88 million, a $14.8 million or 14.4 per cent decrease from the 2007-08 forecast. In 2007-08, $50 million of one-time capital grants were provided for major recreation and sport facilities in Edmonton and Calgary. Capital spending highlights in 2008-09 include:

Get your burn on

Here we are in Charlotte. After a couple cool days the sun is out in full force. It sort of caught many of us off guard and I can see the peeling skin coming soon.

Paddling has been going great! The Seniors are on track for some amazing results and the Juniors, in their first session today, looked awesome. This afternoon we had our full coaching staff working hard on the bottom drop. Greg on video, James on splits and myself watching the show. The Seniors were throwing down some sick lines and owning the tricky bottom section.

I even managed to get out on the water yesterday and it was amazingly fun. Sometimes I forget just how much fun paddling is. It helped that I was WELL rested and it was warm out. It also reminded me how talented our current group of paddlers is. I was getting tips from them on lines that they cane on a daily basis.

A big weekend of training coming up. Time for consistency and confidence!

Do you think it's time to leave?

The weather in Calgary is insane! This morning at 7am, when I got up, there was about 1cm of snow on the ground. By 9:30am this is what it looked like!! 20cm of snow.

The weather report promised 6 degrees this afternoon so we planned a session on the Bow River at Bowness. Sure enough it was sunny and the morning's snow was all but a distant memory. We started the session wary of the clouds to the west, which is where weather comes from in this part of the world. Half way though the workout we look upstream at this wall of white coming down river. The heavens opened up with snow pellets the size of tic tacs. Within minutes we were covered in white and the temperature had dropped about 5 degrees. We toughed it out till the first thunder then made a b-line for the cars.

I can't wait for Charlotte where Paul assures me it is too hot for shorts and T-shirt. 7am tomorrow I'll be on my way.

Found Treasure and new Dimensions

Thanks to everyone who participated in this weekend's Personality Dimension Workshop. A giant thanks to my sister Peggy Holroyd and Karen Hirl, for making it happen. This will help us all communicate effectively, which will in turn, enable you to paddle really fast down a river (I know the relationship isn't linear but it exists).

The find of the weekend was a vintage paddling machine. I got an email Sunday from Paul Lauzon an ex-racer from the late 80's early 90's. He had a paddle machine of that vintage that hadn't been used since about '94 and he wanted to see it put to better use. The thing is a piece of art. Paul built the frame out of wood from a picture of Bob Smith's old machine and then attached the English built pulley and resistance module. It works like a dream! I think it is one of the best feeling resistance modules I've have tried. So now it sits in my garage for all to use. If you are ever board and want a good workout come on down for a session. I even have a TV that I acquired from the National Team to go with it (That beast is a story of its own. Imagine having to cart a TV in a wood Box to Europe to watch video on. no laptops??) Add those to a couple exercise balls, medicine balls, wobble boards, and you've got a pretty good little gym.

Ever wonder what happens to all those old slalom boats once they've been raced for a few years? I've been through over a dozen boats in my career and only know of the whereabouts of a couple of them. They just seem to disappear. Well know I know where at least a couple are. Paul had a couple boats, slalom & DR. Hopefully they will see the light of day and at some point encourage a new athlete into the sport. The Slalom Boat is for Sale $180. If anyone is interested let me know. Looking at the profile I think it would be pretty solid if it was brought down to the 350cm limit.

What a weekend!
